These smoothed maps interpolate across unsurveyed ground between unsurveyed sites not covered by the BBS. The colours on the map show relative abundance in 2003, with darker colours indicating more birds. The numbers are predicted mean BBS counts and are best treated as an arbitrary index of relative abundance. The aim for complete coverage in the forthcoming Atlas will provide continuous abundance data from which we can develop and validate this methodology.
